The Following is a discussion of random sports topics that interest Drew and I. I hope they interest you. If not, no one forced you to come here and you can go back to your facebook page or some youtube video. Enjoy the blog and if you have feedback or insults we'd love to hear them.
Drew- OK let's get the discussion going. First topic. Josh mcdaniels. He
comes into Denver and runs out a star quarterback. They start off 6-0
then go on to have another late season collapse and missing the
playoffs. And this off season he will lose his second superstar,
Brandon Marshall. What can we make of this coach?
J.D.- Sorry it took so long to get to this, my phone decided not to send me
my emails anymore. It took me a few weeks to notice that because, well
between man-cation, new years, and Vegas emails weren't really crossing
I genuinely think the 6-0 start was something like the perfect
storm. They were just making the right play at the right time through
those games. I'm not saying they don't have potential to be good but
that start wasn't a realistic to where they really stand as a team. As
for running the stars out, I think it's part ego and partly because he
didn't think Cutler could pull himself away from always trying to make
the big play and forcing the ball instead of playing in an offense that
requires simple, quick decisions. Belicheck has that same type of ego,
how many pro-bowlers has he ran out of town when they wanted money? As
for Brandon Marshall, I think the guy is incredible, but I just don't
see Denver offering him the big money to stay especially after Jabar
Gaffney went out and had a career day the final game of the season. I'm
sure McDaniel is thinking that his system makes superstars and not the
other way around. I think there's way too much praise for a McDaniel
who came into a .500 team, completely flipped it upside down to make it
a .500 team. I think the praise was due to the disaster of the other
first year head coaches (minus Caldwell and Ryan of course) which made Denver
look much better, along with the hype of 6-0. But that team has had
more ups and downs then an elevator this season, beat the Patriots,
lose to Washington and Oakland. It's hard to say what to expect, next
season will give us a better measuring stick for McDaniel and Denver.
The real question is this, since we're discussing first year head
coaches. The Jets had the hottest start, then a major mid-season slump
after losing the anchor of their defense in Kris Jenkins, then sneak
into the playoffs in games that most would argue were against back-ups
for easy victories. They were under dogs in their playoff match up
against the Bengals then go and win. I was in Vegas over the weekend
for this game and I was going to bet against the Jets because I thought
it was the only real lock game of the weekend, good thing I spent my
afternoon drinking champagne at a buffet and forgot to make that
bet.How good are the Jets? If I drive back out to Vegas this weekend
who should I put my duckets on?
Drew- Well first off I'm glad to hear that you survived Vegas. When I got a call early Friday from a very drunk JD I knew you were in for a long weekend.
Ok so my Jets.
Well at this point I consider the season a success. Getting into the second round with a rookie QB and coach is a huge accomplishment. Did we back in? Hell no. We didn't tell the Colts to rest their starters or the Bengals to take it easy. We played the cards we were dealt. There was a log jam in the AFC near the end of the season and other teams controlled their destiny as well but they lost their games and blew it. We didn't and are looking to take advantage.
I love what Rex Ryan has done with this team. He is so anti Belichick and I love it. So many coaches are completely void of emotion it makes me wonder if they really care that much about the sport. Having to watch Mangini in New York was torture and I think he's a good coach! It just killed me as a fan to see our team lose and watch him have no reaction. The NFL is a copy cat league but this is ridiculous. But I think its changing. Id love to give the credit to Rex but I think it really lies with Mike Tomlin. That guy wears his emotions on his sleeve and I love it. Now you have coaches like Rex, Harbaugh and Singletary all following his lead.
The Jets are good and if they make it past San Diego I do believe we will roll to the Super Bowl but we have to get past this ridiculous offense.
So some other topics I want to touch on now.
I think he will be successful in Seattle. I know people say he is to much of a players coach but all these players are so sensitive these days that you need a players coach. It will take a few years because the personnel on that team is terrible. This of course leads us to Lane Kiffin. I completely support his decision. This was his dream job, it was home, it wasn't the SEC!!!! Kiffin is doing the right thing by bringing in as many top notch assistants as possible. Thats what a head coach needs to do. Let the assistants do their job.
And to all you Volunteer fans.....
Shuuuuuuttttt upppppppp. Yeah you guys got burned but hey welcome to the real world. Its okay to be upset but threatening this man with his life and rioting! You people are crazy! There are sports figures that I certainly don't care about but I would never wish harm upon them. Get over it. Its football. And I love football but its still just a game.
JD... Football season will be over in a few weeks. I have no idea what I'm going to do with the free time. How bout you?
J.D.- I agree with you about Rex Ryan buddy, the emotion as a coach just makes me love the game a little more seeing how much they care. Almost like that child like fun Brett Favre has on the field! Haha, Ask Drew's mom about how great Favre is. But at the same time, you hate Belichick because you're a Jets fan. I think Belichick is one of the funniest, if not funniest coaches in the NFL because he's so nonchilant. To the point where 98.7% of the time people don't know whether to laugh or have been insulted. I get a great joy out of humor that dry.
***Here's my bold prediction of the weekend*** IF the Jets can force 2 turnovers or more and sack Phillip Rivers a few times to get him flustered they will win. The Jets are hot right now, and my Vegas fever says not to quit when your on a hot streak.
As for Carroll, I personally think he'll flop again in the NFL. Why J.D.? Why? Elementary my dear Watson (If you haven't seen the new Sherlock Holmes movie you should, free promo because I thought it was cool.) At USC Carroll got the best recruits in the country, the most talented athletic kids. I could go with a giant list of people but I won't because you could name them too. I think Carroll was a good but not great coach, he was a great recruiter, with a great school and pitch. So good coach, great players, Carroll get out of the way and let them march over people. The only schools that were even close to their recruiting levels for speed and athletes were in the SEC and would probably only be Florida and LSU. So we'll see how much was coaching and how much was hey, were USC and have palm trees, Hollywood, and beaches, many beaches. You can spin the word beaches however you want on that one because they have both. So who wouldn't want to go there.
With that being said, Lane Kiffin just had his super rich uncle die and he inherited everything. (That was a metaphor for you slower readers.) Kiffin will pick up where Carroll left off. Who could blame the guy for leaving Tenessee? Here's a program that has fallen apart in the toughest division in the country, or you could take over a program that has dominated their confrence over the past decade... Is that really a tough decision. I can't believe people would even think he would take the latter.
You're right Drew-san, football is almost over. I'll probably take some time to recap, laugh at the good times we had, cry about the sad ones. Bask in my fantasy football victory. Play some Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2, who am I kidding, I'll be playing a lot of that. TENGO DOWN. Then I'll wonder how I feel about Mark Mcgwire and his recent statements. Then, I'll start worrying about the draft and football free agency. Next topic, definitely want to throw some Mcgwire in there.
