Talor Gooch receives special invitation for 2024 PGA Championship
Reinhold Matay-USA TODAY Sports

As the countdown for the PGA Championship gets underway, the playing field for the second major of the year is starting to take shape. One big name who will be part of this is Talor Gooch, who received a special invitation from the organizers.

Gooch has been in the spotlight this year for his comments regarding the major championships. After being ineligible to qualify for The Masters tournament due to his OWGR (Official World Golf Rankings) points, the 2023 LIV Golf individual champion would take a shot at Rory McIlroy.

The American golfer had claimed that there should have been an asterisk in front of McIlroy’s name had he won at Augusta as the world’s best players would not be in the field. While the North Irish golfer did not end up winning, Gooch was not done there.

Ahead of the LIV Golf Singapore event, the golfers of the breakaway tour were asked whether they would try to qualify for the U.S. Open and the Open Championship. During this, Talor Gooch would drop a two-word answer and comment “I’m not“.

The entry of LIV golfers into major championships without any special exemption has been a huge topic in the past few years. Recently, Phil Mickelson issued a stern warning to the major golf tournaments about the consequences that they might face if they keep on denying LIV players a chance to compete among some of the world’s best.

While Gooch may not be part of the U.S. Open or Open Championship (unless he receives a similar invitation), he will be looking forward to next week. As of now, he will be one of the 11 LIV golfers who will take to the field at Valhalla on May 16th.

Talor Gooch reacts to receiving special invitation from PGA Championship

The news of the Talor Gooch receiving a special invitation from the PGA Championship left some fans surprised. After making some bold comments against the major championships, very few would have expected this development. Nonetheless, this incident would later lead to the golfer expressing his gratitude to the PGA.

Taking to his X account, the 32-year-old would thank the PGA for the invitation and claimed that he will be “looking forward” to the tournament next week.

Looking forward to Valhalla next week! Thank you for the invitation @PGA. See y'all there Talor Gooch wrote on X.

Needless to say, the spotlight will be on Gooch during the second major event. This appearance will be his fifth consecutive start at the PGA Championship. He though has not found much success at this tournament though.

He missed the cut last season whereas his LIV Golf rival, Brooks Koepka, went to take the trophy home. In 2022, he finished T20 at Southern Hills. When Phil Mickelson won the event in 2021, Gooch finished T41. In his first appearance in 2020, he failed to make the cut.

Despite winning three times on the Saudi-backed tour last season, Gooch has been unable to replicate that kind of success in the majors. This appearance at Valhalla, gives him another chance to prove his critics wrong and lay down a huge mark.
